School Comparison
The Schools in the films “Stand and Deliver” and “Dead Poets Society” are nearly exact opposites, sharing only a few similarities From the start of “Dead Poets Society” we see a school that appears rich in tradition, preparing young men for any career they might choose. Garfield High in “Stand and Deliver” is merely a public high school anyone can go there, they have remedial programs, they are a requirement. College prep does not occur there like at the prep school, it’s dirty, over populated, the teachers and building are run down, there is a gang presence , the parents are mostly low income, and the list goes on. The contrast of Welton academy is very definite, it is a live in all boys school, a place where rich parents send their kid to get the best in college preparation. They have everything, perfect campus, highly educated and committed faculty, they are not over populated. The schools appear to be polar opposites, but the share a few things. The obvious, that they are both schools, and the fact that they both deal with adolescents, kid growing up, fighting with their parents, having trouble with women, and not wanting to be at school. So even though the buildings are different, many of the problems are the same.
Good points about both the profound differences and the fundamental similarities!
