Smitherman’s Ideas and the Film
The film portrays the flaws in our countries education system. But Smitherman had linguistic issues in her education due to speaking another language, ebonics. At the time she was educated, it wasn’t considered another dialect of English. If she thinks it should be taught and if it is spoken you should be catered to in your native tongue, she i wrong. If a kid goes to a public school and doesn’t speak the language that the majority speaks and what the school is taught in, then that’s too bad and their parents need to take responsibility for that and resolve it. The system should not be changed because a few people feel segregated. If we even attempted to please everyone, we would fail, that’s why we live in a democracy, majority rules. Simple concept. Are teachers wrong for not recognizing this soft of difference, yes, but although they should help, a teacher is not responsible for everyone. If the minority can not get their act together, that’s their problem, when it becomes the majority, then it is the teacher. Though the education system isn’t without its problems, another large factor starts right at home, if a child's parents aren’t taking their education seriously, then they will likely fail.
i agree whole heartedly matt. especially with how you brought in the majority rules part. this kind of reminds me of places like california (this is just heresay by the way) where they have public signs and the like in spanish. this is america and we speak english not spanish or ebonics.
