Best Work due 10/11
Malcolm X’s “Learning to Read” was the better of the works, not only is it the most interesting to read, it has the best story of overcoming adversity of the three. Going from a street hustler to a self-taught well educated, influential person is an impressive task. Something that struck me in particular was that he realized his weakness and started from the bottom. Malcolm X states “I saw that the best thing I could do was get hold of a dictionary-to study.” A dictionary, the most basic of educational reading, but he read it, copied from it, made himself better. As he improved, learned, read books, wrote, Malcolm X says he “never had been so truly free in my life.” To be free in prison? That is a person that knows what he wants. That kind of dedication, drive to learn, drive to overcome to be better than you were and actually be able to contribute to society, that is what the world needs more of. From nothing beginnings, he becomes one of the most influential men in the civil rights movement. He says “You will never catch me with a free fifteen minutes in which I’m not studying something I feel might be able to help the black man.” He is an inspiring person, this is why I enjoyed his work the best.
