Mike Rose’s “I Just Want To Be Average”
It is difficult for me to really relate to Mike Rose because my own personal experiences differ greatly from his. Though I do agree with him. That people rise or fall to meet challenges. This fact I think is especially true when a person has to lower them self to meet a challenge. It is much easier to make yourself play dumb than to rise up and overcome an obstacle, that requires more thought and work and dedication, the average person doesn’t want to go the extra mile for those things. The same goes for a teacher, if they get assigned to teach a class full of students that don’t want to learn or don’t care, why should they? Why should the teacher put in all this effort to really give the students something to take home just to have them crap it back and not even think twice about it? That is why people raise and lower themselves to their surroundings, it makes it easy, it gives them the ability to go through the motions without anyone giving them any trouble. Makes them a face in the crowd, able to avoid the anxiety and potential negative repercussions of being noticeably different.
